The tourism industry in Dongguan is not as developed as in some other cities in China. Large tourist groups traveling around Dongguan are not a frequent sight; local residents and business travelers are more frequently encountered. However, Dongguan is quite experienced in receiving business travelers with high-end recreational facilities and services, as a result of its rapid economic development. Domestic travelers represent the majority of visitors to Dongguan, with only a moderate number of foreign visitors.

The number of tourist arrivals to Dongguan has grown rapidly, especially among domestic visitors. Though tourism development in earnest started after other cities in China, Dongguan has made impressive progress, especially in 2003, 2006 and 2007. The total tourist arrivals reached 17,251,200 (an increase of 26.6% over the previous year) in 2007; with 11,613,700 (an increase of 23.4%) overnight travelers. The total tourism receipts reached RMB 11.888 billion, an increase of 23.8 percent. The number of foreign travelers was 2.48 million, accounting for 14.4 percent; the number of domestic travelers was 14.77 million, 85.6 percent of the market in 2007. Furthermore, the average length-of-stay of domestic travelers was 2.52 days, with an average expenditure of RMB 582.22 per capita (ranked 5th among Guangdong cities). Domestic travelers were most likely to spend money on shopping. Regarding international travelers, 63 percent were from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan; with an average length-of-stay of 4.3 days; average expenditure was US$ 118.08 per capita.
