Ancient Village of Nanshe
Nanshe Ancient Village, dating back to the Ming and Qing dynasties, is located in Chashan Town, Dongguan.
The village is laid out symmetrically, being centered on a rectangular pool. The homes have been built according to the landscape, with many trees and plants around all structures. At the edges of the city, a fortified wall stands, separating this unique environment from its surroundings. The walls once served defensive purposes, and lanes and alleys inside the village were planned accordingly, offering strategic advantage as defense mechanisms.
Currently, there are 25 ancestral temples and over 200 local-style homes in Nanshe, all with authentic features and rich past. Much of the village’s history is owed to the Xie family. This clan-like family has well documented history. According to their records, Xie Shangren, whose father Xie Xiling was born in Huiji (now called Shaoxing in Zhejiang Province), struggled to move southward because of the social chaos caused by war. Eventually though, the family was able to settle in Nanshe. Their descendents lived to see 700 years of development and change, witnessing first-hand the advances of the Ming and Qing dynasties. The Xie family participated in the boom and growth of Nanshe, helping it reach its current dimensions of 70,000 m2.
The Ming and Qing dynasties were also famous for the number of talented people coming forth in large numbers. Nanshe, due to the contribution of all these, became a prosperous and famous village.
